Disappear in Cognito Farm

Eggs are laid by the “Laydies in Cognito”. Roosting bars, nest boxes and protection from nocturnal predators is built into their mobile Pasture Schooners. They get fresh water and locally-milled layer feed under the protective roof of their Mobile Feeding Unit (MFU).
We move the Laydies so that they can follow the cattle. The "exhaust" from the cattle is a rich source of micro and macro nutrients for the soil and grass. The cow patties are also an ideal place for pesky flies to lay their eggs. The Laydies are attracted to the emerging fly larvae and pick apart the cow patties to get at the fly larvae. This scatters the cow patties to feed the field, and the Laydies also contribute their own droppings to the pastures.

Because they “go to work” each morning and come home each night, they are getting lots of exercise, fresh air, bugs, grass and sunshine. Their eggs have bright yellow yolks, and the egg whites practically salute the pan. The shells are also harder than store bought shells. Florida law prohibits us from selling them with labels for human consumption, so we label them as fertile hatching eggs – which they are. If you were to eat them, you would be getting less saturated fat and less cholesterol than store bought eggs. You would also get more vitamin A and E. Eggs are $3.75 a dozen.
